Hail Sauce is there to provide an opportunity for students to engage in practical entrepreneurship with the support to learn and the freedom to learn what they are interested from product development, marketing to finance.
Research and Synthesis
Background
In 2018, we have worked on Hail Sauce with two partners from Detroit Community High School, in Brightmoor, Michigan, where residents lack of resources.
Our goal is to build a place for young people to improve making skills, develop inter-generational connections, and nurture community revitalization.
Design Challenge -Getting individuals and groups in the Brightmoor community active in the business to better themselves, as well as bind the community together.
Problem Identification
Many students in Detroit do not have a chance to learn about entrepreneurship or just even the first steps to their startups.
Later on, we discovered that there is also lack of passion from members of the community as well. One can be apathy about his/her future even when a plenty of fortune were presented in front of them. The root causes for unemployment in Brightmoor community is not only deficit in jobs, but also is that people are less passionate about their community.
Even when few of them leave the neighborhood, they see their upbringing as a drawback, therefore, they don’t give back to the community as well.
Fish - Fishing Situation
It is often easy to assume people need fish, rather than educate them on fishing.
When they learn fishing, they can actually find attribution in their place and feed the community with fish back.
Research & Synthesis
Sustainability is a trending disruptive tech. Brightmoor, on the other hand, is heavily urban farmed.
Public tends to be more embracing of a younger generation.
Detroit has been supportive about local business and start up.
“Data Driven Detroit” is a city-wide study of Detroit that reveals the lifestyle of the average Detroit child, as well as how prepared they are for the future.
Search for what is already working, such as urban farming and largely forestation.
Iterations
Ideation
We started out designing and building a prototype. We also introduced what is the design process to our partners. The construction of the cart was done separately in order to be time efficient. However, our partners seem to be less empathetic towards this solution.
Pivot Point
When we brought in food to share with our partners and they share interest in creating a hot sauce brand. Kevone came up with the brand name Hail Sauce. This is the moment we all learned that an idea should base on interest and changes should be heart driven in order to be truly successful.
Product Development
“Do that! That’s always where I tell young entrepreneurs to start. I say ‘let’s start with the numbers’.”
